What are EPMs?
The word 'people mover' is used to denote automated transport systems for passengers. It is a contraction from 'automated people mover'. The capacity is low to mid-low. The are two way people movers can be divided: organisational form (collective or individual) and guidance (physical or electronically). The individual version is also denoted as Personal Rapid Transit, or PRT. The collective version is denoted as Group Rapid Transit, or GRT. A lot of website on people movers focus mainly on PRT, what is seen as the transportation system of the future. Personally, I think a network of PRT and GRT combined has a higher change on success... The electronically guided version had the advantage that there is no need for expensive and inflexible rails. The division might get clearer in the following table:
The electronically guided people mover or EPM is the newest generation of people movers, which is no longer depending on rails. The can be used both individual as collective. The ParkShuttle and the CyberCab2 are collective EPMs, the vehicles that will ride in Cardiff are individual EPMs. 1 The system in Morgantown
is a physical guided GRT-system, but is used as PRT is well outside rush
houre.
